How do I get into the Sci-Tech Safari Camp ?

You must apply to get into the camp.† Presently, we only offer one session per summer.† That may change in the future.

To apply for the camp, you must be a fourth grader at Russell Elementary in Smyrna, Georgia with an excellent behavior record.† Of all of the students who apply, 25 are selected to attend the camp.

Selection is based on the following criteria:

  • Safe and responsible behavior is consistently demonstrated in every area of the school day including the bus, after-school program, and the classroom.

  • 100% effort is consistently demonstrated in every area of the curriculum, not just science. This includes homework being completed on time and completed to one‚Äôs best ability.

  • The student is physically fit.

  • The student shows a genuine interest in science and technology in their classroom.

Can I attend a field trip with my child ?

All supervision for field trips is done by the Sci-Tech Safari staff..† Everyone on the staff is either an experienced certified teacher or a trained medical person.† Parents also tend to have varying work schedules and their availability often changes frequently.† That simply makes it a logistical nightmare to try to schedule meals, transportation, and accommodations for parents on something of this scale.

We would love for mom or dad to join us during our On-Site days whenever your schedule permits.

If I don't attend Russell Elementary, can I still attend Sci-Tech Safari ?

No.† This may change at some point in the future, but for now it's limited to students who attend Russell Elementary.† We're a great community here in South Cobb, maybe you should move here!

I'm not going to be in fifth grade next year.† Can I still attend Sci-Tech Safari ?

No.† In the future we hope to offer different sessions for Sci-Tech Safari that are open to other grade levels, but for now it is only open to upcoming fifth graders--in other words, students who are now in fourth grade, but will be in fifth after the summer.

What kinds of things will we do in Sci-Tech Safari ?

There's so much planned!† Here are a few of the things that we hope to accomplish:

  • Dissections of several different animal species
  • Model rocket construction and launch
  • Owl Pellet Dissections
  • Identifying and recording different species in the area
  • Microbiology (that means studying living things that are so small they can only be observed with a microscope)
  • Of course, there are the field trips to study all sorts of scientific things at places like Jekyll Island, Raccoon Caverns, and Providence Canyon.
  • There's so much more, but this is nice little taste!

Do you feed us while we are at camp ?

Yes and no!† While we are on a field trip, we eat at restaurants or lunchrooms, although on certain trips campers may bring a snack for the long bus ride.† The restaurant meal is paid for as part of the camper's tuition.† When we are working at Russell, campers bring their own sack lunch, drink, and snack.† Refrigerators are available.

What does my tuition pay for ?

Check here for a detailed answer to this question.

Isn't this camp awfully expensive ?

$350 is not chicken feed!† That's for sure!† However, if you check any other camps in the area and see what you get for your money, I think you'll find that this is quite a bargain.† It's not unusual for a 5-day day camp (no overnight stays) in this area to cost more than $350...and often a LOT more than $350!

Can I bring a CD player or electronic game on a field trip ?

No.† Most of the places we visit do not allow them.† Plus, it does tend to ruin the natural experience.† Most of these places are awe-inspiring enough as they are and just don't need any electronic help!† Please refer to the packing list in the Parent's and Camper's Guide for questions about what type of items may be brought on field trips (or contact Chris Laster).

I am attending Sci-Tech Safari.† Can my older or younger brother or sister also come to the camp ?

Only if they are an upcoming fifth grader (in other words, they will be in fifth grade next year), and they have been accepted into Sci-Tech Safari.

Is there an ASP (After School Program) available where my child may stay after the camp ?

No.† If you are not able to pick up your child at 5:00 PM (or upon return from a field trip) then please make other arrangements.† If any child is not to be picked up by their custodial parent we are required by law to have WRITTEN permission from the custodial parent.
